Buying Horseshoes with Facebook Credits

Facebook is currently giving away 25 free Facebook Credits to all users who play games. If you primarily play FrontierVille, you can use those credits to buy Horseshoes, the in-game premium currency!

I’ve had a few readers ask me how to buy Horseshoes with Facebook Credits. Instead of replying to you all individually, I’ve written a short tutorial on the subject.

Here’s how:

1. Click the “Get Horseshoes” tab on the top right of the game screen.

2. Select the amount of Horseshoes you wish you purchase. Hint: 10 Facebook Credits = 1.00 USD So if you only have 25 credits, the most you can buy is 15 Horseshoes for 2.00 USD.

3. Under Payment Options select “Facebook Credits”

4. Click Continue, and you will receive a pop-up confirming your purchase.

Et voilĂ ! You’ve got some free Horseshoes.

Today’s Wednesday, which means we’re probably getting an update today! Zynga doesn’t do “official” update days, but for the past two weeks it’s been on a Wednesday. So fingers crossed!

Official FrontierVille Screenshot Contest

Are you enjoying the new Water items? Do you have an eye for detail? Want to win 500 Horseshoes?

Taken from the Official Forum:

Howdy Pardners!

The FrontierVille team wants to see how creative you have been while decorating with the Water Features recently released. Post a screenshot of your homestead focusing on the water features and you can win 500 Horseshoes.

The winning entry will also be featured on FrontierVilles fan page!

You can read all about the contest, including the rules, here.

The deadline for the contest is August 3rd, and no photo-shopping is allowed.

Sounds fun! Unfortunately I’m not the best decorator and most of my frontier is crowded by crops. I’ll have to put my thinking cap on. Good luck everyone!

If you’re confused how to take a screenshot, here’s a quick step by step tutorial:

  1. Open up FrontierVille – You should know how to do this
  2. Open up Microsoft Paint – (Start > Program > Accessories > Paint or just type “Paint” in the Run search box)
  3. Decorate your Homestead to your Heart’s Content.
  4. Once you have your Homestead set up just right, you’re going to want to click the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard. Sometimes this looks like “prt sc” and is usually on the upper right hand side of your keyboard. On my keyboard, “prt sc” shares a key with the “insert” key and I have to push the “fn” key and “prt sc” at the same time.
  5. Switch Windows back to Paint. Either click “crtl” + “v” or the “Paste” button.
  6. After clicking Paste, your screenshot will be in the Paint window. It will be of your entire computer screen, including the top of the Facebook window. You can crop this down to size using the select tool.
  7. After you’ve cropped your image down to size it’s time to save it! Make sure you save it as a .jpeg file instead of a .bmp file. Bitmaps take up lots of space.

And you’re all set!

Happy Screen-shooting!

FrontierVille Ribbon Crisis 2010

Once again, the number is blurred out because its embarrassingly high

On July 14th, 2010 the Ribbons were taken out of the Free Gift option.

This may not seem like end of the world, because, well, it isn’t – word is that this was a mistake and that Ribbons will be a free gift once again, most likely sometime today.

But this ribbon shortage, which I have dubbed RIBBON CRISIS 2010!!!, has brought up some thoughts on the subject. Ribbons are one of those annoyingly subtle game mechanics that you never notice until you need them. I know I always took my gifted ribbons for granted, wishing for a building/school supply instead.

You need ribbons for the marriage quests, to make fancy clothes, and to learn lessons at the school house.

Aisde from the free gift option, you can get ribbons one of three ways: Buy them for 4 horseshoes a piece, collect them off the news feed, or turn in a collection. Of the three, collections are the best – and fastest – way to acquire the elusive ribbons.

There are three collections that give ribbons as a reward:

  • Flax Collection: Four Ribbons, Two Cloth
  • Cotton Collection: Five Cloth, One Ribbon
  • Sheep Collection: Three Cloth, Two Ribbons

You’ll notice I’ve already covered Cotton in This Post. As for Flax & Sheep, you’re in luck!

Some people call Flax seed oil “Linseed oil”

Flax is one of those versatile crops that can serve you very well indeed. It has a growth time of 8 hours, which at first glance may seem like a lot, but actually makes Flax the perfect bed time crop. Plant it before you go to bed, and it’s ready for harvest in the morning. Fabulous!

Also, it’s 8 hour stint fits nicely with most real-life work schedules. Plant it before you go to work, and harvest when you get home. If you time it correctly, you can get 2 harvests of Flax per day.

If, however, you don’t have 8 hours of downtime then Sheep might be a better bet.

The Fabled “V-Shape” Sheep Migration Pattern

Sheep are relatively cheap and ready for harvest in 2 hours. In the time it takes Flax to grow you’ve already harvested your sheep 4 times!

If you don’t feel like growing Flax, Cotton, or Sheep you may have some neighbors that do. In that case, you can take advantage of their investment by tending their Flax, Cotton, or Sheep each visit. I often find myself getting collectible items on my neighbors homestead. It’s a great way to speed up the process.

As previously mentioned, the Ribbons should be returned to the Free Gift tab sometime today. If, however, you’d rather your neighbors send you tools, these strategies are a good way to get some ribbons yourself.

Of course, before I realized that RIBBON CRISIS 2010!!! was an unintentional glitch I panicked and bought tons of sheep and planted loads of Flax. Oh well, guess you can never have too many ribbons after all!

FrontierVille Horseshoes on Sale!

If you didn’t notice yet – Zynga is having a sale on Horseshoes! 20% off all purchases of $40.00 (32 euros) or more.

While the horseshoes tab doesn’t give an exact date for when the Sale ends, I’m assuming it’s going to end Tuesday at 11:59PM EST – which is the same time we lose the Fourth of July Cherry trees.

Now is when the dilemma of spending cash on a Facebook game sets in.

If you know you are going to buy Horseshoes eventually, it might be a good idea to buy them while they’re on sale. Even if you only buy 5$ worth every once in a while, it still would be in your best interest. I haven’t played any other Zynga games, but I have played other Facebook games, and I can tell you from personal experience that I’ve only seen a sale on an in-game-cash-currency ONCE in the past year. So the likelyhood of Horseshoes ever going on sale again is quite low, and if they were, they probably wouldn’t go on sale again until Christmas-time.

It’s the Holiday Bear of Commerce!

Personally, however, I think this is the last time they will be on sale. I think that Zynga wanted to generate some revenue rather quickly, since FrontierVille is so new. I don’t blame them for this – they are a company looking to make money just like Nintendo or Electronic Arts.

But now I’m stricken with indecision! To buy or not to buy…

It reminds me of when Apple had a sale on iPods in Fall 2008. It was on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and at the start of the Great Recession. The internet was abuzz with the news: Apple NEVER has a Sale.

Any of you Pioneers planning on taking advantage of the sale?

Or would you never spend money on a Facebook game?
